Paint Chalkboard Project

Most craft supply and home improvement stores carry chalkboard paint, or you can make your own in any color your like using the recipe at the bottom of the page.

First, prep the area that you want to paint. Tape off a section of wall using a low tack masking tape. Next, primer the chalkboard area with a tinted primer like Kilz. After the primer dries, lightly sand the chalkboard area with a fine grit sandpaper.

Then apply your chalkboard paint. It may take several coats, painting in different directions to completely cover the area. Sanding with fine grit sandpaper in between coats will help keep your surface smooth.

Allow area to dry completely. You can then add some "accessories" to your chalkboard. Tape off a 3" border around the chalkboard area, then fill in with a solid color acrylic craft paint. Allow to dry, then use contrasting colors of acrylic craft paint to create fun shapes or letters around the board. Once design is completely dry, seal with a semi-gloss or gloss clear sealant to protect the border.

Installing a small wall shelf or thick piece of moulding below the chalkboard area is also a great way to store chalk and erasers. It will also catch chalk dust and help to keep your floors clean.

Recipe for chalkboard paint:
2 Tablespoons Acrylic craft paint, any color
1 Tablespoon Glazing medium, water based
1 Teaspoon Powder Tile Grout
Mix well and apply to wall.

Only mix as much as you need immediately, because it does not store well for more than a few hours in an airtight container.

You must also condition your chalkboard before using if you make your own paint. Do this by running a piece of chalk on its side over the entire chalkboard area. Now wipe off the chalk with a clean felt cloth. With a damp cloth, wipe the chalkboard again to clean completely. Now your chalkboard is ready for use.
