Decorating Kids Furniture

Personalizing your children's furniture can be fun and easy. Here are some simple ideas for turning a plain piece of furniture into a masterpiece.

Hardware
Probably the most simple way to customize and update a piece of furniture that does not require refinishing is to change the hardware. Most children's specialty stores have knobs and drawer pulls available in a variety of shapes to match popular themes such as cars or princesses. Simple knobs that have pastel or primary color patterns are also adorable and readily available. Or paint your own. Visit our Room Accessory Projects page for tips on painting drawer pulls.

Paint It

Decorative painting is all the rage, and you can get in on the trend no matter your artistic abilities. Use acrylic craft paints or paint pens that work like markers but leave a handpainted look. The basic acrylic craft paints can be found at craft supply stores for between 50 cents and $1.50 per 2 ounce bottle. Paint pens are at craft and art supply stores and generally cost $3 to $5, but often go on sale.

Use techniques like striping rings around chair legs and spindles, polka dots both large and small or intermixed, geometric shapes, swirls, swiggly lines or odd shaped spots to look like animal print.

You can also stencil on designs or transfer a design with WallNutz Mural Kits, found in our online store. The transfers work by placing the pattern and transfer paper, tracing over the pattern with a ballpoint pen, removing the paper and painting in the remaining outline. If you can color in a coloring book, you can use the WallNutz kits and paint pens to create a children's furniture masterpiece.

Once your design is applied, you should seal the piece of children's furniture with a clear finish. You can find lacquer or my favorite, Polycrylic by Minwax at home improvement stores. Just apply several coats with a regular paint brush, allowing each coat to dry completely before the next application.

Transfers
Some home improvement and most craft supply stores carry rub-on transfers or wall paper cutouts that can be applied to the furniture. The wall paper cutout are removable, and a quick way to get a very detailed design on your nursery furniture or child's furniture.
